McGregor vs. Diaz III

Conor McGregor recently released a statement that he was looking forward to matching up for a third time with Stockton’s own: Nate Diaz. This is music to the ears of the 209 crew who have been begging for round three ever since McGregor ended the night with his hand raised at UFC 202.

Unfortunately, Dana swiftly stepped in to dash our hopes and dreams like a bad high school guidance counselor telling a student they’ll never get into college. “The problem with the rubber match is Diaz is a 170 pounder,” White said. “He’s a massive guy. Conor is a very talented guy, he’s very, very good. Every time he goes out there he looks better… [But] we should have never done it in the first place. That’s what weight classes are for. They wanted to do it, we did it. They wanted to do it again, we did it again. They’re 1-1.”

Leave it to Dana to not let facts get in the way of whatever comes oozing from his mouth. Diaz is a Lightweight. He has been a lightweight his entire career. While he occasionally bumped up for match-ups, 155 is the home of Nate Diaz. If we need to step into the time machine to visit how the fight took place at 170 lbs to begin with, it’s because Nate took the fight on 10 days notice and didn’t have enough time to prepare and cut weight. So in order to save UFC 196 the fight took place at 170. Nate emerged victorious by rear naked choke. Conor, ever the perfectionist, wanted the fight back on the same terms and circumstances that he lost to Diaz. In a display of beautiful violence Conor wiped the slate clean in what is considered by many to be the greatest MMA fight of all time.

Which leads us to our present situation: when will the rubber match happen? I think it is pretty plain to see what is happening here, Dana is working on the Mayweather-McGregor show and wants all attention on the new circus in town. I don’t think he really means that we will never see Diaz vs. McGregor III, because like he said about the Mayweather fight, “There’s so much money involved, I just don’t see how it doesn’t happen.” With millions of fans lined up for Diaz vs McGregor III screaming, “take my money!” I just don’t see how that fight doesn’t happen.

Do you think we will see this fight happen? Do you want to see this fight soon, or could you wait another year or two? Let us know in the comments below.
