UFC Flyweight Champion Demetrius “Mighty Mouse” Johnson defended his belt for the 10th time against Wilson Reis at UFC on Fox 24. The tenth title defense ties the UFC record for title defenses. The record was previously held solely by Anderson Silva. Silva is considered by many to be the greatest fighter of all time.
Unfortunately, Mighty Mouse is still plagued by skeptics and neigh sayers as he showcased his record breaking performance on a free tv event to a lackluster viewership. MMAfighting.com reported the night’s totals as, “1.74 million viewers on the overnight ratings, and a 0.6 in the 18-49 demo. It was down 18 percent from last year’s April FOX special, that did 2.13 million”.
So why aren’t people freaking out over this guy? The answers depend on who you ask ranging from strength of competition in the flyweight division, to lack of an arch nemesis (think Diaz vs McGregor, or Mir vs. Lesnar). Or you can go straight to the source and blame UFC or even WME IMG for not marketing him correctly. Regardless of what the answer is I think we can all agree that Mighty Mouse deserves better. So when he hits the cage to add to his legacy by defending his belt an 11th time, lets have it on a pay per view so even the casual fans get a taste of his greatness.
For this writer: Mighty Mouse is the P4P king, and deserves a bigger stage. What do you think?
